the glass sealoft
~~~
High, high above the Worlds - not just our own, but All of Them - drifts a quiet, empty beachside. The waters of the ocean are seemingly dark, yet crystal clear, offering an unobstructed view of the expansive cosmos below. Although this 'water' might as well be invisible, you can still occasionally discern the gentle ripples of soft waves, as they cause the twinkling starlights below to waver and refract for the briefest of moments.
The 'sand' of the beach is composed exclusively of miniscule, perfectly spherical glass beads. Compared to the very honest view of the starscape through the sea, the glass sand offers a far more extravagant lens; the starlight from below becomes split, amplified, and remixed, each bead of sand acting as a small prism, causing the entire beach to endlessly radiate a soft but intense rainbow glow.
In stark contrast to these magnificent lightshows, the 'sky' above the Loft is an ominous pitch black. Wherever and however this place exists, it seemingly rests just outside the normal bounds of the normal universe. We can dive into the sea to descend to the World below, while both the sand and sea stretch endlessly towards the horizon in all directions, but above us might be nothing at all... or perhaps whatever lies beyond that inky darkness is better off hidden?
This is our Home, the place we return to between our adventures out in the World. It's cozy and familiar, but... for some reason there are places even we cannot go. In particular, there's the Lighthouse, which has been sealed tightly shut since long before we arrived here. It stands above the tallest of the sandhills near the shore and forever shines a light of its own across the waters, but I've never seen any ships or other vessels up here. Besides that, whenever one of us attempts to venture across the sands, no matter which direction we pick or how far we walk, we'll always eventually end up back at the shore, near the lighthouse, with the others...
